Forward Deployed Engineer | New York City | In-office

About kala

Helping US-based startups and SMBs build stronger teams by finding no more, no less than the right people remotely for tech, product, and marketing roles worldwide.

About the hiring company

Our partner is a B2B SaaS company building AI workflow automation for operations teams

Their platform connects AI agents with a company’s internal data, tools, workflows, and operating rules, allowing teams to automate processes that today still require significant manual work and coordination.

They’re now looking for a Forward Deployed Engineer to work directly with customers and own deployments from the first technical conversation through production.

This is a highly technical, customer-facing role for someone who likes understanding messy real-world problems, building the solution, and seeing it operate in production.

👀About the role

You’ll be responsible for turning customer workflows into working AI systems.

That means understanding how a process operates today, identifying the right points for automation, configuring agent behavior, connecting external systems and data, testing how the solution performs, and continuing to improve it after launch.

You’ll work closely with customers while also partnering with Product and Engineering to identify what should become part of the core platform rather than remain a one-off implementation.

The role requires someone who can move comfortably between a customer meeting, debugging an integration, evaluating agent behavior, and making a technical decision without waiting for perfect information.

👉 Responsibilities

  • Own enterprise deployments from technical discovery and workflow design through launch and production iteration.
  • Map complex customer processes and translate them into clear technical workflows, integrations, and agent behavior.
  • Build and configure AI agents across prompting, retrieval, tool use, workflow logic, and external integrations.
  • Define evaluations and guardrails to ensure agents behave reliably and predictably in production environments.
  • Work directly with APIs, customer systems, operational data, and internal tools required for each deployment.
  • Debug issues across agent behavior, integrations, data, and application logic.
  • Identify recurring needs across customers and design reusable patterns instead of solving the same problem twice.
  • Partner closely with Product and Engineering to influence platform capabilities based on what you learn in real deployments.
  • Create technical documentation and implementation standards to support increasingly complex customers.

👉 Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience owning technical implementations or deployments involving multiple systems, integrations, or data sources.
  • Hands-on experience building with LLMs, AI agents, retrieval systems, or AI-powered workflows.
  • Strong experience working with APIs and integrating third-party or customer systems.
  • Ability to work directly with technical and non-technical customer stakeholders and quickly understand how their operations work.
  • Experience working in environments where requirements change, information is incomplete, and decisions need to be made quickly.
  • Based in New York City or able to work regularly from the NYC office.

🍿About the process

The full process is expected to take around 3 weeks and requires approximately 3–3.5 hours.

  • kala talent conversation – 30 minutes: First conversation to understand your experience, what you’ve built, and what you’re looking for next.
  • Founder interview – 45 minutes: A deeper conversation around your technical background, customer-facing experience, and how you’ve handled complex deployments.
  • Technical working session – 60 minutes: A practical discussion based on a deployment scenario. The focus is how you break down the problem, design the solution, and make technical decisions.
  • Onsite meeting in NYC – 60–75 minutes: Meet members of the team in person, go deeper into the product and current challenges, and make sure there’s a strong mutual fit before moving to an offer.

💜Compensation & Benefits

  • $200,000–$250,000 base salary.
  • Bonus and equity, with total compensation typically ranging from $260,000 – $290,000 depending on experience and package structure.
  • Flexible PTO.
  • NYC-based onsite / hybrid role, with regular in-person work expected.
